Alex Lindower
Jul 18, 1961      Av 6 5721

Alex was the second of three boys born (Sept. 27, 1916) to Sarah & Joseph Lindower and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. After college he met Gertrude, the love of his life, at a dance and they married on Oct 18, 1941. One year later he got his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. The army interrupted the start of his law career, but fortunately he was stationed in Florida, and Gertrude was able to be there with him. His army buddies had many photos of their favorite famous “pin-up” girls on their locker doors, but on Alex’s locker door there was simply a picture of Gertrude! Alex was always a “go-getter”. After the war he not only opened his own law practice with offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but he did real estate as well. In the summer of 1958, he and Gertrude, with their 2 daughters, Ronnie and Shelley, moved into Mill Basin. It was a community of new homes and Alex worked tirelessly to help bring in needed services like busses, street and traffic signs, and stoplights. There also was no temple there and Alex was instrumental in getting Flatbush Park Jewish Center opened as well as the Flatbush Park Civic Association.

He was a loving, doting husband and father who was very proud of his wife and two girls. He was encouraging, and funny, sometimes silly and he loved to dance.  He was only 44 years old when he suddenly died on July 18, 1961. In gratitude toward him and in remembering all the hard work he did for Mill Basin, the community requested the City of New York build a playground and pool in his name. In 1966, the Alex Lindower Park in Brooklyn was dedicated and has since been renovated and re-dedicated.  So when Alex’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren go to that playground, they can be reminded of the great love Alex had for his family and his community.
